Cities are in full demographic growth and economic progress. However, these are the subjects that are aggravating air pollution that is why electric cars are a tendency for the near future, at least in some capitals. Cities such as Beijing, China, and New Delhi, India, are suffering, the health of each inhabitant, and the consequences of lack of planning on the controlled growth of the city.
The carbon footprint is indeed all over the world.
The city of São Paulo, for example, is facing a serious urban mobility problem where you cannot have enough public transport to serve the population of demand, due to the lack of public policies for this. And the economic incentive for car purchase, such as the successive reductions Tax on Industrialized Products (IPI) and advertising do not help solve the problem (more on megacities and increasing pollution). Centerpiece on the issue of air pollution, the car emits a high amount of carbon dioxide that considering a national fleet over 42 million cars, resulting in emission of enormous proportions, plus the environment suffers a lot thanks to that. For the most part, they are powered by gasoline. But there are also options such as diesel, derived from distillation of petroleum that is also widely used.
Diesel – a great problem to the environment
Diesel, used mainly in the segment of heavy vehicles, oriented to public transportation and cargo, has a number of problems. Emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter are mainly related to these models. NOx is also a precursor in the formation of ozone and particulate matter has high concentrations in several urban areas. The outdated technology, use intensity and high middle ages contribute to increasing the impact of diesel vehicles. Urban buses, urban delivery trucks, vehicles traveling on roads crossing urban and private light vehicles areas are therefore crucial to the degradation of air quality in cities. Furthermore, a major problem associated with the use of diesel oil as fuel oil is the sulfur (S) contained therein. The diesel is composed by mixing gas oils, kerosene, naphtha, and other chemicals. However clean diesel provides
- Less pollution
- Better power for the vehicle
- Less expenses with maintenance
- Better for the environment as a whole
- Cost is slightly higher which will not be such a huge problem.
The environment problems do not end there.
The sulfur is undesirable chemical element both to the environment but also to their own diesel engines because during combustion, sulfur trioxide, to join the water, forms sulfuric acid that corrodes metal parts of the engine. If the concentration of this element is raised, emissions of particulate matter will also be high as well as the emission of primary pollutants such as SO2 and SO3. This mixture of particulates and sulfur oxides, the sulfur produced in the firing process, as in the case of combustion of diesel vehicles, essentially present as substances harmful to humans.
Cancer danger – will electric cars be a solution?
Electric cars are far from being a reality in many countries, so they should not count as a solution. Even with all the problems already mentioned, it is important to remember the main thing: the diesel is a proven carcinogen according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, in free translation – (IARC), linked to the United Nations (see more here). That is, the ideal is the complete fuel substitution by other types using renewable sources and cause no harm to health and the environment.
